Mikono is Swahili for hands. It's a reminder of the literal and metaphorical hands-on work that defines how we serve every facility and every resident.
Founder & CEO
Dr. James Wambugu is an internationally trained physician — MBChB (MD equivalent) — with more than 20 years of hands-on experience across healthcare, as both a clinician and a builder of healthcare ventures.
He began his career in East Africa, where his work spanned medical personnel training, market research, developing health risk assessment tools, and building wellness communities. The throughline was always the same: finding the gaps in how people access care, and building practical ways to close them.
That focus followed him to the United States. As a clinician, James had seen again and again how delayed or missing lab work stalls patient care. Mikono Health was built to fix exactly that — partnering with skilled nursing facilities across Greater Baltimore to close diagnostic gaps and keep lab orders moving.
